First camping trip of 2017

Almost one year ago, we had the coldest camping weekend ever!!! Fortunately for us, we had recently bought a little 1976 (pumpkin green) Trillium Trailer, or else, we most likely would have cancelled the weekend. We joined our friends at the Whistler campground (in Jasper), and my oh my, was it a rainy (actually) horrible weekend!!

We had the dogs with us (which we always love), and great company (we were three families in total)… but when it’s raining that much, I feel it is always such a hassle with trying to light fires, make food, keep things (relatively) clean, finding things to keep occupied with etc.

Sometime during the first night, it started raining, and it basically didn’t stop for two days straight!! Fortunately we have a furnace in the trailer, and was able to heat it up sometime during the night… my, how that things saved us!! It was on this trip that we also found out that our trailer has a couple of leaking spots (which led to a total exterior rehaul…. and in typical fashion, we went all out — it was such hard work!! – I’ll blog about it sometime!).

But we woke up the next morning with the sound of rain. And who doesn’t like the sound of rain? Well, usually when we’re in tents, I really don’t like that sound – I have once too many times needed to pack up our things and tent in the rain… not.a.fan…. But, this time we were sheltered, and cuddly in the trailer. It does have its perks, that’s for sure!! We played UNO-cards for quite a while, ate fruit loops (a favourite guilty camping pleasure of mine!), read magazines and drank coffee!!

So on one of these rainy days we just drove around a bit, seeking some spots that we have never been, checking our some lookout points that we’ve passed in the past…

We took a trip to Lake Annette, something which we had never seemed to get to before, or had just forgotten about… dreamed about owning one of those super special houses in that area, and did a short wandering along the path (but not far – because wet and rain!). We saw a sign for quicksand and contemplated how when we were younger, we were led to believe that this was going to be a much bigger deal in our lives than it turned out to be!! Haha…

On the last day, there was a break in the clouds, and we quickly did a short hike up Old Fort Point. It is a really quick, but straight up hike with the BEST views!! We were lucky enough to spot a wandering goat (super pretty photos), and were able to share this view with only a very small handful of people!!

We headed home (if I recall correctly), that evening, deciding that it was too cold and unpleasant for us to spend another night…. May in Canada can be pretty unpredictable weather-wise!! What was exciting was that we (almost immediately) upon return started working on our trailer revamp!! It took a full month to complete, but we are SO excited about it!!

  1. My sister and I were in Jasper in May 2 years ago. We had one full day of rain but we loved it there. Saw several grizzly bears, moose, elk . . . so much wonderful wildlife there.

    1. Thats fantastic!! I feel like lots of times people get so lucky with spotting wild like bears… weve only been fortunate to spot a small handful on our many outings to the mountains!! Jasper is SO magical!! So glad you had a good time! Unfortunately the weather is always unpredictable, but a lot of times that is still something special to experience!!…. and that fresh mountain rain smell is priceless!!
